Thoughts on Ursula Le Guin

Ursula Le Guin said the Tao Te Ching gives ‘a pure apprehension of the mystery of which we are a part’. I think poetry when it’s really good gives us a sense of that mystery, the expansive infinite nature of the universe. Or poetry can make us see something in a new way.

  1. Yeah mysticism is interesting. There is a guy called Richard Rohr who writes about it. It’s like an ability or tendency to see the whole, the whole universe in everything.

“To see the world in a grain of sand
    and eternity in an hour”
    William Blake

I’m not saying I’m William Blake or even Ursula Le Guin but I think my mind does tend to see things holistically or even mystically. Unfortunately it’s quite an unfashionable way of looking at things in this hyper specialised scientific age. I think it’s probably allowed in poetry arena but otherwise if you talk about G-d or whatever people just think you are making sweeping generalisations or just shut down.
